"Your soulmate is not someone that comes into your life peacefully. It is who comes to make you question things, who changes your reality, somebody that marks a before and after in your life. It is not the human being everyone has idealized, but an ordinary person, who manages to revolutionize your world in a second." - Anonymous

Forbidden Last Only Power - Part 1/?

[At Samezuka Station, in the on-duty room, late at night]
Rin is alone on his shift, reading a magazine and very bored. That’s when the phone rings with an alert.

Rin: “Ah, a case? Heheh, I was just starting to get bored! What is it tonight? A mysterious phantom thief appearing in a multimillionaire’s mansion? Or rival gangs duking it out over a smuggled diamond? Or…”

He stands, excited, and a voice comes in over a wireless speaker.

Officer: “A sensor has been tripped at the aquarium in the Samezuka Station’s district! Trespassing is suspected. Head to the site immediately!”

Rin looks a little disappointed.

Rin: “…Wait, the aquarium?“

[In front of the aquarium, late at night]
A patrol car has stopped in front of the darkened aquarium

[Inside the aquarium, late at night]
With a flashlight in hand, Rin walks around the dimly-lit halls. It’s dead quiet. There are no sign of any human activity, nor any sounds.

Rin: “Nothing weird here… Maybe it was a false alarm? Like a big rat set it off or something when it passed by?”

Rin continues to mutter to himself, but when he steps before the large main tank…

Rin: “…?!”

He looks up. Inside the large tank, swimming lazily with the fish, is a merman—he locks eyes with Haruka.

Rin: /eyes widen/
Haruka: /looks at Rin/

The pair stare at one another through the tank’s glass. Rin can’t tear his eyes away from the graceful form of Haruka swimming.

Rin: “Amazing…! But what’s he doing in there…?”

Rin’s eyes twinkle with joy, and he dashes off.

[Inside the aquarium, on top of the main tank]

Rin rushes up the stairs to scale the tank, yanking the door open—where he finds Haruka has just lifted himself from the water.

Haruka: (turns to face Rin)
Rin: “…Huh?”

Haruka stares at Rin; his tail has already disappeared, and he’s now standing on two legs.

Haruka: “…What?”
Rin: “…Was that you, swimming just now?”
Haruka: “Yes.”

Rin can’t get the image of Haruka swimming as a merman out of his head.

Rin: “What…are you?”
Haruka: “I’m…”

[At Samezuka Station, in the interrogation room, late at night]
Rin interrogates Haruka. They face each other seated across a small interrogation desk, and Rin scribbles on a record sheet as he asks Haruka questions.

Rin: “You’re being charged with trespassing in the aquarium. Understand? Now answer truthfully. Let’s start with your name.”
Haruka: “Nanase Haruka…”
Rin: “Pretty girly name.”
Haruka: (frowns) “You’re one to talk.”
Rin: “Huh? …Wait, how do you know my name?”
Haruka: “I saw it when you were writing in your officer’s journal. Matsuoka Uzu (渦)…”
Rin: “It’s not ‘Uzu’, it’s Rin! How many girls do you know named ‘Uzu’ anyway?!”

Rin continues with his questions.

Rin: “Your job?”
Haruka: “…Don’t have one.”
Rin: “Age?”
Haruka: “I forgot.”
Rin: “Hey now… Ugh, whatever. The next question’s the important one here.”

He delivers his question to Haruka with a spirited expression.

Rin: “What are you?”
Haruka: “A half-fish-man.” /BAM!/

Rin kicks away his chair and launches himself across the table, grabbing Haruka by the collar and drawing close, speaking in a voice laced with threat.

Rin: “Are you trying to make me look like an idiot?”
Haruka: “…I only spoke the truth. What’s with you, anyway? You’ve been asking the same thing over and over again. Are you trying to make me look like an idiot?”

The pair glare at one another.

Rin: “…”
Haruka: “…"

At length, Rin gives up with a sigh. He releases Haruka’s collar (shove!) and slips into his chair once again.

Rin: “…Ugh, we’re getting nowhere. What’s a half-fish-man anyway? I mean, you’ve got legs!”
Haruka: “That’s how my body works.”
Rin: “What’s that supposed to mean? Explain in detail!”
Haruka: “Actually, I’m hungry—feed me something first.”

Rin clucks his tongue.

Rin: “…Tsk, fine. But once you’ve eaten, you’re gonna talk. I’ll treat you to some katsudon, cliched though it may be.”
Haruka: “I’d rather have salt-grilled mackerel.”
Rin: “Huh? You sure do have some balls for a trespasser! Fine, no food at all for you.”
Haruka: (frowns) “…Fine, just hurry up and give it!”
Rin: “No way, I still don’t trust you. But the night is young, so let’s have some fun, shall we…?”
Haruka: /…So annoying./

[At Samezuka Station, in the holding cell]
[CLANG!] The door shuts, and Rin locks the cell. Inside, Haruka sits with a sour frown.

Haruka: “…”
Rin: (looks at Haruka) “C’mon, don’t gimme that look.”
Haruka: “Water…”
Rin: “Fine, I’ll get you some water at least. Wait here.”
